South Salem senior Sebastian Ruelas

The Salem Sports & Breakfast Club named Sebastian Ruelas, Sarah Teubner, Ahmed Muhumed and Paige Whipple as its Senior Athletes of the Year at its Nov. 18 meeting.

Ruelas, a senior at South Salem was named senior athlete of the year for boys soccer. He scored 16 goals and had five assists this season. He tied the South Salem record for career points with 93 and set the career record for goals with 41 and was first-team all-league three times.

Sprague senior Sarah Teubner

Sprague senior Sarah Teubner

Teubner, a senior at Sprague, was named senior athlete of the year for girls soccer. She scored nine goals and had 11 assists this season, including scoring three game-winning. She was the Greater Valley Conference player of the year as a senior.

West Salem senior Ahmed Muhumed

West Salem senior Ahmed Muhumed

Muhumed, a senior at West Salem, was named senior athlete of the year for cross country. He won the past two OSAA Class 6A state championships and is one of 11 athletes to win multiple state championships since 1951.

West Salem senior Paige Whipple

Whipple, a senior at West Salem, was named senior athlete of the year for volleyball. The outside hitter was named first-team all-state tournament and was the GVC player of the year.

Signing

Shelby Jenkins has signed a letter of intent to compete in track and field at Corban.

The Aumsville native will be eligible in the spring of 2017.

Jenkins is currently a sophomore at College of Southern Idaho, playing outside hitter on the school’s volleyball team.

The 5-10 was a first-team all-state volleyball player as a senior at Salem Academy in 2015 and was a four-time all-conference player at Salem Academy.

In track and field, she placed ninth at the Class 3A state meet in the 400 meter dash as a senior and third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump as a junior.

Athlete of the week

Central senior quarterback Peter Mendazona was named athlete of the week by the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association and MaxPreps for his game Nov. 11.

In Central’s 42-36 win against Redmond, he completed 22 of 30 passes for 396 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for another touchdown.

For the season he has completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,454 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Fundraiser

McKay’s Athletic Booster Club has begun an 18 Million Cans campaign to raise money for a turf football field.

The group is attempting to raise $900,000 between now and April 2017 so that the turf field can be installed by next fall.
