Fresh face at quarterback has Cascade back in state semifinals

The quarterback no one had heart of before the season has thrust himself into the spotlight with big plays in the biggest points of the season.

Cascade High School’s 5-11, 150 pound junior, Quinn Legner, threw touchdown passes of 34 and seven yards and broke free to run for a 36-yard Friday’s 34-21 win against South Umpqua in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 4A state playoffs.

Now the No. 15 seed Cougars (6-3) are in Saturday’s state semifinals where they will play No. 6 seed Cottage Grove at 5:30 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.

Peter Mendazona, Central football: The junior quarterback was 22 for 30 passing for 396 yards and five touchdowns and ran for a touchdown in Friday’s 42-36 win against Redmond.

Tanner Earhart, Dallas football: The senior running back rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s 29-28 win against Summit.

Grant Webb, Salem Academy football: The senior running back rushed for 57 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s 34-28 win against Santiam Christian.

Bishop Mitchell, Kennedy football: The senior running back rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries in Saturday’s 47-0 win against Toledo.

Caedmon Blair, Dallas football: The senior quarterback ran for a touchdown and the game-winning two-point conversion in Friday’s 29-28 win against Summit in the state quarterfinals.
