Junior Sandoval is so important to North Salem’s defense that the coaches didn’t want to use him much on offense this season.
The 5-10, 185 pound senior safety was a first-team all-Greater Valley Conference player as a junior and is a ball hawk in the defensive backfield.
The stuff he’s doing on offense has been a bonus.
He had an interception in the fourth quarter and an important tackle in last week’s 23-22 win against South Salem, but the team-high 82 yards rushing on 11 carries is something that was a necessary surprise.
Sandoval was selected as the athlete of the week by a poll of readers of the Statesman Journal.

Senior Junior Sandoval.
