South Salem’s football team has done it again.
In both of the previous two seasons, the Saxons brought in a standout basketball player with little to no football experience and turned them into a standout receiver.
In Friday night’s 34-29 win against McNary, Gavin Baughman caught eight passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.
The 6-foot, 190 pound junior was a part-time starter in basketball as a sophomore and was an honorable mention all-Greater Valley Conference selection.

Jared Oliver, West Salem football: The senior quarterback passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns on 21 for 29 passing and rushed for the game winning touchdown in Friday’s 36-29 win against Sprague.
Levi Neilsen, Silverton football: The sophomore quarterback was 15 of 20 passing for 307 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown in Friday’s 41-35 win against Redmond.
Bishop Mitchell, Kennedy football: The senior running back rushed for 331 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries in Friday’s 47-14 win against Knappa.
Peter Mendazona, Central football: The junior quarterback was 22 for 33 passing for 229 yards and three touchdown in Friday’s 24-14 loss to Mountain View.
Keonte McMurrin, West Salem football: The senior receiver caught five passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s 36-29 win against Sprague.
Spencer Clements, Silverton football: The junior receiver caught seven passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
